It's not ever going to be just a date, is it? Or maybe it is. It's hard to guess, only two years after the fact. But still, it always jumps out. I still occasionally get a case where someone was arrested on September 11, 2001, or was supposed to go to trial that day but the minute order says that the judge sent everybody home. And every time, I stop. I stop even if the date says September 11, 1999.

i'm staying home from work today (for unrelated reasons), and my first thought wasn't "staying home on thursday", it was "staying home on september 11th". our contractor is coming over to look at our attic tonight, and she and i had a hard time talking about it. "thursday, september 11th, right?" [long pause] "i think there's something going on that day. other than the anniversary, i mean."
