my friend iain killed himself sometime this week.

i had been looking forward to seeing him in baltimore this january. we weren't especially close, but we saw each other at alt.polycons, and i read his lj, and i did look forward to seeing him every nine months or so.

oh, christ. he was one of the few people who'd been at all the alt.polycons. iain, if you wanted to break the streak, we could have made sure you got bronchitis that week or something.

he was sweet and funny and well liked and smart and deeply geeky and i liked him a lot. and he had been struggling with anxiety and depression and meds that didn't quite work for him for longer than i'd known him.

safe journey, sweetie. i'm going to miss you.

was he at the boston alt.polycon and did i somehow manage not to meet him? that makes me sad, although maybe i should be glad not to have pictures in my head to miss.

anyway, you know i'm here if you need me.

yes, i believe he was there. you were only there for a wee bit, though-- i am certain there were lots of people you didn't meet. *hug*

betsy, I'm very sorry.

The penny only just dropped for me about which Iain he was. He never posted a whole lot to alt.poly while I was there, but his situation was very much a part of the alt.poly that I remember. I am sorry that things turned out so sadly.

there were surprisingly few people there who i didn't meet because i went to the brunch and aahz dragged me around and introduced me to everyone there. you never saw so many people look blank ("lisa who?")--it was quite embarassing for a very shy person. it's even possible that i did meet him and was so busy agonizing over how much i wanted to be someplace else that he didn't register.

not important--either way it doesn't make any difference now--just thinking out loud.

*another hug*

Stef pointed me at Lisa's comment ;-), so I figured I'd just correct the record to note that Iain wasn't at AP11. AFAIK, only IanH has been to all Alt.Polycons, kind of funny for someone who doesn't read alt.poly much.
