did i mention the no subtlety part, or had you picked that up on your own?

anyhow. the ex got most of the cool kitchen gadgets, because while he didn't actually cook any more than i did, in this area (as in all areas) he is more of a gadget freak than i am.

so, i am short on knives and pots and pans and tongs and such. i am adding things to my amazon wishlist (under my last name, and my description says that i am allergic to the shift key), so far nearly everything that oxo has made except for the toilet brush. i am resisting the toilet brush, but it's difficult.

i have to figure out what pots and pans i need. any suggestions? i am not much of a cook, although i am looking to become more of one. i think what i'm looking for is something in the "eh, pretty good" range.

this is not, by the way, shilling for presents. but if you were going to buy me any, i'd be sooo excited to see kitchen stuff off this list. (or bath thingies. did i mention the house has an honest to god usable bathtub?)

Here's a great article on the six things you need for a well equipped kitchen.
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4607144

In short:
8" chef's knife (Nick swears by Henkles knives)
4" paring knife
10" nonstick saute pan (the kind with deep sides, like 3 inches)
13" cast-iron skillet (we have an anodized calphelon skillet that I use all the time, it would also make a great weapon in a tight spot)
6-8 Quart Pot (how much in a quart? hell if I know, I just check what the box says)
6-8 Quart Dutch Oven (we also have the little Calphelon anodized dutch oven, a cutie and perfect for feeding 1-3 people.)

The one thing I would say about his size recommendations is to try lifting any new skillets in the store. We have an enormous saute pan that I have a hard time lifting one handed. Same goes for dutch ovens and pots, make sure the handles are convenient and you aren't going to drop it when pouring out spagetti into a colandar, for example.

Other critical kitchen tools imo: potholders and at least 6 dishtowels, a wire mesh colandar (more versatile than traditional ones) a pepper mill with built in salt shaker, a microplane grater, a garlic press, a vegetable peeler, wooden spoons, a spatula, and a good cutting board.

I thought it was a great summary and am using it to constuct a set for my brother's new apartment.

Also, in equipping your kitchen with tools, if you don't have the Oxo everything yet, you should check out this site, which has lots of fun little crittas (for when ergonomics don't matter).
