i stayed home from work today and ground glass. it went well. then i went to class, and ground some more glass, because what one hopes for in stained glass grinding is not a jigsaw puzzle fit. one hopes for a pencil lead width between the pieces. so, i got it to that spot, and then started foiling the pieces.

i still need to foil the outside edge pieces (which are more tricky, because you only foil the inside edge bits), and then solder all the bits together before next week's class.

it's turning out really nice. someone in my class told me that he thought that mine looked the nicest out of anyone who'd chosen that pattern to work. and he was even one of the people who'd chosen that pattern. wow.

but i'm really looking forward to the soldering. i like soldering. i used to solder things a lot when i was a kid. my dad had a soldering iron, and i just liked melting the solder and the smell it made and how it was so cool. (yes, i was also a firebug as a kid. for years my mother wouldn't buy me candles because she was afraid i'd burn myself up on them.)

but, yeah. the gift certificate for this class was definitely a good winter holiday present. thanks, sweetie. :)

oh.

oh.

oh!

i'll stop hyperventilating in a minute. honest.

i forgot to grab a book before i left the house this morning. so i had to go eat lunch without anything to read.

how do people who don't read stand it? i mean, really? i was sitting there, eating my sandwich, idly scanning all the tables in the lunchroom to see if there was a section of the paper anywhere around, or if anyone had left a magazine, and i ended up reading the subtitles on the training video that they are playing repeatedly in the lunchroom for the new revolving doors. "scan your card. wait for the beep and the green light. walk through. always use your card." over and over and over again. i didn't spend long at lunch. i knew that there was text waiting for me here, at my desk, even though it is just work stuff.

i saw memento last night. very strange. very spooky.

at least i know that that one doctor who left er has in fact worked again.

the biggest issue with making stained glass so far is the little glass splinters in my fingers. there are very few (many fewer than i'd thought) enormous glass shards shooting straight for one's little unprotected eyeballs. but little tiny unseeable bits that only make themselves known when you try to grab something? yeah, bunches of those.

i am taking the class at glass endeavors which is right down the street from me. nice people. gorgeous glass.

this weekend we had the enjoyable experience of making the acquaintance of the emergency vet in apple valley. (don't worry, the dog is fine.) we called, and zoomed down there, and were seen relatively quickly. hurray!

it was a little panic-making, however. we had a short discussion about "should the dog be making that noise?" "hm, no, i don't think dogs usually make that noise", and then off we went. i'm used to having that discussion about cars, not dogs.

but the vet says that all is well, and that pirate, as we all know, is the cutest dog on the planet.

i went to the first night of stained glass class last night. it's really amazing to be able to score and break glass. you take the cutter, run it along the line you want to cut, pick it up, and snap it into pieces. wow. this is really a fabulous thing in terms of helping my self confidence in what i can do with my hands.

i went to the endodontist yesterday. the best part of going to the endodontist is having x-rays taken. i'm not so fond of the part where little particles that could cause cancer are being pointed directly at my head, but i really like the lead apron. i would like a lead blanket to sleep under. think of how warm it would be, and it's nice and heavy and comforting.

has anyone else read the james thurber story _the heavy blanket_? maybe i'm the only one who was imprinted by that at an early enough age...

now pirate has her own page. check it out!

arrrrr! it's a pirate!

more pirate!

yet more pirate!

and finally, even more pirate!

i need a digital camera so that i can inflict more dog pictures on people. i had to have my sister's boyfriend come take these pictures. handy, but not sustainable, i think.

i think i've grown. or something. there's got to be some logical explanation for why my desk chair was the perfect height for me for two and a half years, and now it makes my back hurt.
